Upon booking, the owner (who speaks fluent English) personally reached out on WhatsApp to make sure we knew how to get there and if we needed rides. Rides to and from Hoi An are free; the owner is a Hoi An local and will arrange a car for you, although we just took a Grab on the way there.

Upon arriving, he gave us passion fruit juice and discussed how the tour works. He explained there are some local fishermen who offer to do like a rodeo ride where they spin the boat in circles or who let you cast a fish net, but that they expect a tip (I did the rodeo which I think was definitely worth it for 100k VND) and are completely optional. Otherwise, the only cost is the initial cost of booking.

Half the ride is through a wider river that's full of other boats and different "attractions" like the rodeo boats, watching fishermen cast nets, and weirdly, boats with Korean karaoke speakers, and the other half is through narrower coconut groves.

I shared a boat with a friend and the boat operator, and they provided us with bamboo hats and umbrellas to protect against the sun. They make it a point to avoid the loud, obnoxious music/karaoke floats in the river and go at a more leisurely pace. We never felt rushed (whole ride takes a little more than an hour) and while I was initially afraid it would be too much of a tourist trap, it actually was a great way to see the region from a different perspective and just go for a ride. You can learn a lot of history from the owner or the boat driver too.
